Assassin’s Creed Syndicate People and Places FAQ

The Rooks won’t be your only allies when Assassin’s Creed Syndicate launches on PS4 and Xbox One on October 23 (and on PC on November 19). Your journey will also put you in the path of many famous historical figures, from inventors, to writers, to monarchs. With the game’s launch just around the corner, here are some of the people Jacob and Evie will interact with in London, and some of the notable locations they’ll explore. (This is the third entry in our FAQ series. The first focuses on the game’s crafting and customization, and the second teaches you how best to use and upgrade your Rooks.)

Which historical figures will I encounter in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate?

On their journey through London, Jacob and Evie will meet up with the likes of Alexander Graham Bell, Florence Nightingale, Frederick Abberline, Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx and, of course, Queen Victoria. Some of them may pop up as you progress through the main story, and some you may have to seek out in the world.

What is the extent of these characters’ involvement with the story?

Some characters – like Dickens, Abberline and Darwin – will issue side missions to the twins. The themes of the missions will vary widely depending on the character; where Dickens’ missions tend to focus on debunking London ghost stories, Abberline will offer up rewards for completing various bounty-hunting missions, which offer higher payouts if you bring the target to him alive. Abberline is one of your key allies (known as Associates) in the city of London, and you get more than just experience and money for completing the tasks he sets forth. As you level up his loyalty, he will supply you with special pieces of gear. We’ll get into more detail on Associates and side missions in a future guide.

Alexander Graham Bell will also provide you with missions, though these are actually tied to the main story. Bell is the mastermind behind the twins’ gauntlet-mounted rope launcher, as well as the enemy-stunning voltaic bomb, so you’ll encounter him at a few key points in the story.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go

What are some of the key locations I’ll be able to explore?

London is broken up into seven boroughs, all of which are controlled by different Templar lieutenants when you arrive in the city. Each of the boroughs (Whitechapel, Westminster, Lambeth, Southwark, the Thames, the Strand and the City of London) has a different difficulty rating. You will be able to explore the entire map almost right from the start, but you may find yourself outmatched if you venture into an area like, say, the Strand or Westminster and start picking fights or taking on district missions. Of course, in each of these boroughs are a number of familiar landmarks for you to climb all over – landmarks like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben (though Big Ben isn’t actually the clock tower’s real name) and many more. You can even take a trip down the Thames on the river’s many steamboats. You can swim in the Thames, but… well, it’s not very clean water.

What is the difference between the various boroughs of London?

Strolling through each of the boroughs is a unique experience. Not only are they all quite visually distinct, the music in each area also sets a specific mood. There is a strong sense of musical discovery as you make your way through the world; in a rich area like Westminster, you may find yourself walking among the city’s wealthiest inhabitants while grand music sweeps you off your feet, but in a much less affluent district like Whitechapel, you’ll find the slums. Here, the poor beg in the streets and the police are rarely seen. Murder ballads fill the air and crime is rampant. After a short time in the game, you may even be able to tell which borough you’re in without looking at your map, just by going off of visual and audio cues.

How do I go about conquering the boroughs?

Conquering the boroughs is actually tied to your progression through the game. Jacob and Evie are trying to weaken Templar Grand Master Crawford Starrick’s hold on the city, and one of the best ways to do that is by clearing his army out. Each borough contains a series of important missions, which must all be completed in order for you to take ownership of that district. Once a borough has been claimed, Rooks will be spotted more frequently on the streets and the Blighters will start clearing out.

Earlier in this FAQ, we mentioned Associates and leveling up loyalty. Characters like Abberline, Henry Green, Clara O’Dea and others will all have missions tied to your progression through the city. As you free districts, you will complete child liberation missions, bounty hunting missions, gang stronghold missions and more. Each of these will improve your standing with your allies, who will reward you with gear, schematics and rare crafting ingredients.
