Assassin’s Creed VR Experience Announced
AMD kicked off its recent Capsaicin press event by revealing its AMD Radeon Pro Duo video card, but that wasn’t all that was unveiled at the show. Matthew Lewis, president of Practical Magic VR, took the stage to announce the Assassin’s Creed VR Experience, which is tied to the Assassin’s Creed movie due out this December. But what is it, exactly?
“It’s not a game,” said Lewis during the presentation. Instead, he said, it’s a cinematic experience shot alongside the Assassin’s Creed movie at each location and set used by the film.
“We’re capturing and re-creating the world from the film in really high quality, using massive textures [and] complex geometry,” said Lewis, adding that the project is nothing less than an attempt to create a virtual-reality experience using the same level of technology as a feature film. “It’s all being painstakingly done with 3D scanners. When I say painstakingly, it was our team that was literally there in a warehouse in Malta in the summer, scanning swords and weapons and costumes from this movie.
“It’s very, very hard work,” Lewis added. “We’re going really, really far trying to create this experience so that it’s really on par with the motion-picture experience.”
The Assassin’s Creed movie arrives in theaters on December 21. Much of the Assassin’s Creed VR Experience remains shrouded in mystery, but we’ll have more as soon as it’s revealed.
