Rugged Solutions-provider Mindset Underpins Getac’s Growth in Key Markets

This year’s first quarter saw Getac Technology, a rugged solution provider at the front of a global rebound in the fiercely competitive rugged tablet and notebook market, driven by a focus on delivering the best possible solutions for customers. Quarterly research from VDC, a B2B technology market intelligence specialist, pointed to global rugged tablet market growth of more than 31 percent year-on-year (YoY), with shipments up 16 percent. At the end of the in the first quarter of 2021, the market’s total vendor revenues stood at US$240 million. In this healthy climate, Getac emerged as one of just three rugged tablet manufacturers to increase market share.

Notably, the company reclaimed and extended its lead in the Americas, where it has held pole position for four of the last five quarters. The region’s tablet market surged more than 40 percent YoY. Demand for rugged tablets was up nearly 41 percent in North America and 44 percent in Latin America. Getac capitalised on this to improve its market share across both geographies by six percentage points to claim 22.5 of the total.

Getac’s consistently strong performance in a fast-growing segment reflects customer appreciation for the combination of comprehensive product lines, flexible service in the form of Getac Select solutions, and three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Demand for rugged tablets and other handheld devices has been so pronounced that it has partly prompted a decline in global rugged notebook sales. VDC values the global market at $205 million based on vendor revenue. In North America, revenues increased a marginal 5 percent, while in EMEA they fell 35 percent. Nonetheless, the segment remains an important battleground, and Getac advanced significantly in two key markets, highlighting continued growth potential amid evolving customer needs.

In EMEA, Getac has become the leading rugged notebook producer and sees a significant market share growth at a YoY increase of almost 10 percentage points in 2020. Getac maintained this remarkable performance in the first quarter of this year and extended its share in the Americas to close to nine percent. While incremental, the advance marks a stronger foothold in a market where demand for notebooks is still growing. Meanwhile, in Asia-Pacific, where the market grew by a quarter, Getac maintains close to 16 percent.

Getac ranks among the top three vendors in every geography it operates in, but is the only one to focus exclusively on rugged mobile devices. This in itself has proved advantageous, but Getac Select has been an important driver of growth.

Getac Select recognises that the operations of customers in the rugged industries, from industrial manufacturing to public safety, transport and logistics, automotive and utilities, can be complicated, and that they often have their own custom hardware and software in place. The system sees Getac assume a consulting role and prescribe a combination of products and services to fit the customer’s situation, spanning preconfigured hardware, software, accessories and professional services.

As the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic begin to ease, challenges such as supply-chain management and other logistical and operational issues are likely to persist across a wide range of industries. Time and cost will be watchwords for businesses, and as such, speed of delivery and ways to reduce the total cost of rugged device ownership are likely to be key differentiators in the selection of rugged vendors amid the recovery.
