Ed hails the quiet brilliance of classic Thief, and ponders what might have been lost in the intervening years.
A terrible, potentially career-ending confession: I never got round to playing the Thief games – from whose dank, fragant soils the entire modern first-person adventure genre has arguably sprung – back when they were a Thing. That’s a failure of taste I’m now rectifying, having finally picked up a copy of 2004’s Deadly Shadows – generally deemed to be the worst of the three, though also the vehicle for its most depraved spine-tingles, and the one Thief escapade I can get running on this filthy dog of a PC.
