Inside Rainbow Six Siege’s Single-Player Situations
Every game has a learning curve, and that’s why the development team at Ubisoft Montreal created Rainbow Six Siege’s Situations. These single-player scenarios give you the chance to acclimate to how the game works before you head into Terrorist Hunt or the PvP modes. Animation Director Scott Mitchell walked us through the Situations, and how the solo experience is meant to benefit players.
Going Solo
“Fundamentally, the Situations are missions that are geared toward teaching the player how to use the different mechanics and operators,” says Mitchell. “It’s also a good way to get players familiar with the maps. These Situations are a really great way to ease into the experience.”
Each of the Situations will present you with a scenario and assign you a different operator. Once you have your operator, you will be dropped into a map and give a series of objectives (your main objective and three optional objectives). The main objectives could be things like eliminating all the hostiles in the area, extracting a hostage or protecting a high-value target from incoming attacks, while the optional objectives might be more focused on the operators or using certain tools.
One Situation posed a very straightforward objective: Eliminate all hostiles. Jedoch, the building they were hiding out in was filled with hidden Nitro Cells. For this Situation, I was placed in the shoes of IQ, a brilliant engineer with a device that allows her to detect electronic traps and gadgets from a safe distance. As I slowly made my way through the building taking out enemies, I also kept a careful eye on my gadget so I wouldn’t unknowingly step too close to an explosive. For an extra challenge, I had three optional objectives I could attempt – destroy five enemy Nitro cells (check); finish the Situation in under five minutes (two enemy stragglers kept me from hitting this one); and finish the Situation with at least 50 health remaining (check).
There are roughly 11 Situations in total, so not every operator will be featured. Rather, the Situations will explore the various roles operators play – Point Man, Trapper, Blocker, Support and Breacher – to help you learn how to use them and how you can build a successful team with them before the game sends you into the Terrorist Hunt modes.
“At the end of the Situations, it leads you into your first exposure to the Terrorist Hunt modes,” says Mitchell. “There are cinematics that give you context as to what’s going on. That’s when you end up getting communications from Six, where you find out about the White Masks and what’s going on there. Hierher, you can either play alone or with up to four other people.”
All of the Terrorist Hunt modes can be tackled solo, although difficulty will not scale down for you and, natürlich, you’ll still have only one life.
Confidence Booster
If you’re not familiar with Rainbow (and sometimes even if you are), getting dropped straight into Terrorist Hunt or PvP can be a daunting thing. No one wants to embarrass themselves in front of their team. And that is a pretty major reason behind development of the Situations.
“The purpose of the Situations is mostly to make sure the player gets comfortable with specific mechanics,” says Mitchell. “We want to make sure they know how to make use of the destruction, and how to use the different operator types.”
“In the closed alpha and closed beta, we weren’t really thinking about progression,” he adds. “We were just throwing everybody into the fire, and people who were maybe newer to Rainbow wouldn’t really know what they were doing. It’s really difficult to just get thrown into this game. You start learning by trial and error, which can get really frustrating for some people. People learn the game really quickly, but we want to make sure everyone goes into the experience feeling a bit more secure about their skill level.”
Whether you’re a newbie or a hardened vet, it’s always nice to have a refresher course. The Situations will provide you with everything you need to feel confident when you finally take on the multiplayer.
