Animal Crossing: Nouveaux horizons just got a mise à jour massive with over 9,000 new items. Let’s take a look at some of the unsettling new items available in the update:
Human Bones
Try not to think about this one too hard. Sure, we’ve had the skull available as a fossil for a while, but that’s ancient man — these bones look récent. Our money’s on the bones belonging to someone who kept resetting their game…
Mannequins
Sure, mannequins aren’t creepy when they’re just showing off clothes, but they have potentially creepy applications. Après tout, these are basically the first human-shaped furniture we’ve seen in New Horizons — if you wanted to display clothes before, you would just get a little stand. Even in New Leaf, clothes were displayed on a villager-like wooden mannequin with no features. These are ACTUAL PEOPLE-SHAPES and the implications are vast. Do real people exist in Animal Crossing? Where are they? What’s wrong with our villagers that makes them not look like that?!
Mossy Stuff
Again, moss isn’t scary on its own — it’s basically just a sponge made of grass. But with the right interior design know-how, you can make some downright spooky homes for your villagers using the new Glowing Moss material!
New Animated Wallpapers
There are two new animated wallpapers that will make you wish you put a toilet down in the room: Graveyard, and Candles. Those don’t sound too scary, but there’s a trick to both…
With the Graveyard wall, try turning the lights off, and you’ll notice that there’s a ghost in the background. Turn the lights on and off again, and the ghost will move closer. Horrifying!
The Candles wall is cool, but when combined with the Magic Circle flooring (and the lights off), a magical summoning circle of light will appear. Vous avez été averti. Do not summon demons! It’s hard enough to get ugly villagers off your island, you don’t need the spawn of Satan too.
Gyroïdes
Gyroids are lovely, and very cute, but they’re also a little horrifying, trop. They’re based on Japanese haniwa — figures that were made to honour the dead, and were buried with them. When you’re digging them up, you could be disturbing a grave.
The Science Pod
You want to be one of those weird mad scientists with a basement full of horrible experiments? Good news for you: The new Science Pod furniture item functions as a table, and you can put items in it to look like they’re floating suspended in goo. Quelques exemples:
Ruins
Much like the mannequins, the ruins have sinister implications. Who was here before us… and what happened to them? There are ruins on the Happy Home Paradise island, and you can also create your own by unlocking the furniture yourself.
We have to wonder why Nintendo added all this weiiiird new stuff. Sure, it gives people new options for haunted houses and goth islands, but they didn’t have to go this hard!
