If you’re hoping to secure a Sega Genesis Mini 2 when it arrives in North America this October, you might want to act fast.

This system, loaded with over 50 classic games including Sega CD titles, is expected to be in short supply. Ars Technica reached out to Sega’s main office and received confirmation the Mega Drive Mini 2 could only be produced insmall numbers due to the global semiconductor shortage”.

As a result, it’s really aJapan-only project”. While the company will produce a “piccolo” batch of Genesis Mini 2 for the North American market here in the west, availability is expected to be far less than the previous Genesis Mini.

The number of units for this project makes up around one-tenth of the total for the previous Genesis Mini.

This news isn’t all that surprising if you’ve been following tech supply shortages. Just last month, Sega’s classic hardware producer Yosuke Okunari warned that production of the Mega Drive Mini 2 sarebbe “much lower due to supply issues and the increased price of components.

There’s no word on a European release of the Mega Drive Mini 2 ancora, but you can learn more about the North American release in our previous post:
