Logitech And Tencent Games Are Working On A Cloud-Based Handheld Console
Logitech G, the gaming branch of the Swiss peripheral giant Logitech, has announced that it has partnered with Tencent Games to work on a dedicated cloud-based handheld device.
As reported by The Verge, the system is currently very much in active developement, and nothing has been announced at this time regarding release date, pricing, or what the system will actually look like. What we do know, however, is it will be a handheld alternative to smart phone peripherals and will support services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia’s GeForce Now, with Logitech and Tencent working with both Microsoft and Nvidia on the hardware.
Ujesh Desai, the general manager of Logitech G, had the following to say regarding the partnership with Tencent Games:
“As one of the leading global platforms for game development, publishing and operations, Tencent Games has been at the forefront of innovation and it’s why we partnered with them. As someone that grew up playing video games, the idea of being able to stream and play AAA games almost anywhere is super exciting, and we can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on.”
You’ll be able to sign up for updates on the new console via Logitech’s website. In the meantime, the company has confirmed that the system will launch later this year, so we can probably expect to hear more details in the coming weeks and months.
Regardless of how this turns out, it is certainly an interesting development in the world of cloud gaming. The technology is still very much in its infancy and the few cloud releases on the Nintendo Switch have proven to be problematic at best. How far this new handheld system goes in pushing the technology forward is anyone’s guess, but it looks like it’s definitely here to stay.
