Switch Online’s N64 Update Is Live (Version 2.3.0), Here’s What’s Included
Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 application received an update earlier today bumping it up to Version 2.3.0. Apart from the release of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, it seems Nintendo has also made some adjustments behind the scenes.
Nintendo doesn’t release patch notes for app updates like this one, but there are other ways of finding out what’s changed. Well-known Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome reveals adjustments to a number of existing N64 titles including Star Fox 64, Dr. Mario 64 and Mario Golf – which serves as a reminder Nintendo is continually improving the overall experience of the N64 library on Switch.
[NSO – Nintendo 64] Version 2.3.0 is out.
– Kirby 64 added.
– Star Fox 64 had gamma adjustment enabled – gamma value was set to 1.8.
– Dr. Mario 64 had renderer settings adjusted (“ConstValue_0” added).
– Mario Golf had renderer settings adjusted (“ConstValue_1” added).
The same source has also noted Kirby 64 has had the least amount of changes “so far” out of all the games that have come to the Switch Online N64 application.
“Interestingly, Kirby 64 appears to have the least amount of patches and hacks that I’ve seen so far for this emulator. There are the usual renderer settings adjustments present, but there are no CPU instruction patches or hooks.”
A previous N64 app update dating back to February this year also made a number of changes to some existing games. The fog was restored in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and other games like Paper Mario also got some love. Game developer Modern Vintage Gamer reviewed the same update – highlighting how N64 emulation was “getting better”.
